Any attempt to divide the state of West Bengal by the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership would be defeated, the state legislature firmed up today after passing the resolution after a heated debate on the motion under Rule 185.
The debate revolved on the topic that the Opposition leaders, read BJP, attempt to cede north Bengal.
The legislators from the ruling party tried to pin the Opposition down by pointing out differences within the saffron camp.
Sovandeb Chatterjee, the state minister for agriculture, while addressing the House on the motion, used the word “influx” of Lepchas, Gorkhas to the Hills to rationalize his speech.
Spoke of the history of the people from the hills.
The Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari accused the ruling party of raking up the matter of a separate Gorkhaland and keeping it alive and ticking without getting it resolved while signing the GTA agreement.
He later accused the ruling party of doing all this with an eye on the panchayat and LS polls.
Kurseong BJP MLA Bishnu Prasad Sharma suggested that on the issue of Gorkhaland, let there be a referendum in the hills, which could be done with the permission of the Election Commission of India.
State municipal and urban development minister Firhad Hakim stressed on the need to unite Bengal and cement the legacy of unity to defeat any divisive agenda that the RSS-BJP may be harbouring. He praised the hard work put in by the chief minister Mamata Banerjee to bring in development in north Bengal.
Mr Adhikari, while speaking on the motion, questioned the rationale behind the introduction of such a motion, which the BJP does not subscribe to.
He accused the government in power of an attempt to hoodwink the people of Bengal by diverting its attention from various scams that the government is now entangled in.
